July 6th-12th at Wild Rock
Bring your Y Members card and receive a 10% discount on any regular priced merchandise.  Wild Rock in turn will donate 5% of all Y Member sales that week to the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign.

100% of the money that is raised stays in the community and helps support children and youth programs at the Peterborough YMCA.

Weather it be a P.A. Day Camp, a membership for a deserving child or a week at summer camp, the experiences and memories will last a lifetime.
This is what the YMCA's Strong Kids Campaign is all about.

With the current economic downturn, they have seen the demand for assisted memberships/programs double.  They have already received more applications in 2009 than in all of 2008.

With your help, we can assist more families.

So bring your YMCA card when you shop from July 6-12 and save money while helping a worthy cause.

Wild Rock is launching some products it is pretty excited about at the Peterborough 1/2 Iron Man at Beavermede on July 4th and 5th.  Tom Curran will be helping us launch Newton Running shoes.  Newton shoes help you run better.  They make poor running style more difficult and good running style easier for those struggling.

Wild Rock has in-stock the new 2010 lineup,

Find your Sweet Spot
When you walk, you land on your heels. When you sprint, you land on your toes. Running is in between. Efficient distance running is about landing on your sweet spot. Not your heel, not your toes. Newton Running encourages running on your midfoot/forefoot, a technique and position that helps keep you running more efficiently, injury-free and faster, no matter the distance. We think of this style of running as a Land Lever Lift scenario.

We will also have a large SKINS booth.  This is the place and time to purchase some SKINS tights, socks or shorts.  This compression technlogy has been helping athletes of all types perform better and recover faster.

Look for free giveaways with purchases while they last.

Minden 150 Bike Tour

On August 15, on Homecoming Day of the Minden Sesquicentennial Celebration, an exciting new event is taking place.  A bike tour will be held with a choice of rides for cyclists of all abilities.  For the hearty, enthusiastic cyclists there will be a 150 km ride, with each kilometer marking one of the years of Minden's history.

For those who love to cycle but find the 150 km ride daunting, there is also a 70 km ride, which will allow the participants to enjoy varied terrain through Haliburton County.  There will also be a 30 km ride, giving  everyone a chance to find a route that is comfortable for them.

All rides will start at the Minden Community Centre in the morning of the 15th of August, and they will be followed by a delicious meal and camaraderie with fellow cyclists.  Please check out the ride as well as the other interesting Minden Sesquicentennial activities at the www.minden150.ca website.

Hope to see you there.

Scott's Rant
Before I get into my rant; if there is no rant in August all is not good in the world, it is because I expired while racing the Canadian Death Race as I was invited to be on The North Face team.

Our future is rantdecided now.  This sound bite rings true on a personal level and a civic level.  Our future health relies a great deal on what we do now.

If we exercise, keep our weight under control and eat well today we have a much greater chance of living a long, active, fun-filled life.  This means re-training our reward systems so we more often make the better choice.  If you walk or cycle to work you will find the reward is a great wind up and wind down from your workday.  Exercise does not have to be a chore.  Try to work it into your every day life.  Get a push mower, walk to the store, take the stairs, paddle to the island, bike to work/school and cancel your cable/satellite programming.  Watch the pounds fall away and your smile wrinkles deepen as you cost the health care system less.

The Canadian Community Health Survey found that kids between the ages of six and 17 were more likely to be obese if they spent a lot of their spare time watching TV, playing video games or using the computer.
Meanwhile, another study found that Old Order Mennonite children tend to be fitter, stronger and leaner than other Canadian kids - even despite a lack of phys-ed classes or organized sports.  The children also don't have access to video games, computers and television. What they do have access to is up to 18 minutes more of moderate or vigorous physical activity per day compared to most other children.  They also have access to regular chores.

The median distance traveled by Canadian workers to get to work was 7.6 kilometers in 2006.  By cycling at a modest 20 km/h that will take you only 22 minutes!

So where is the civic content of my rant?  Our cities need to be leaders and not followers.  It is the tax system that will be burdened by the bills coming due as our obese nation ages.  Instead of spending billions on infrastructure to increase the capacity of our roads and parking areas we should be spending mere millions on making alternative transportation easier.  It is not only less expensive in the short term but it also pays dividends in the long term.  Cars are not a long term solution to moving humans around.

If there were safe trails and bike lanes so your kids could get to school many would use them.  If there were safe trails and bike lanes so you could easily ride to work you might ride/walk more often.  Our present system rewards apathy and lethargy and punishes those who will burden us least in the future.  Our parking is congested with people who have driven a walking or cycling distance.

If you agree please write Brian Bouchardt, Malcolm Hunt and the Council.  Let them know what you want in your city:  Do you want bike lanes and if so where? Do you want to reduce vehicular traffic and parked cars on our downtown streets? Do you want wider sidewalks and pedestrian-friendly spaces?  More green space? Less asphalt?  Let them know.

Malcolm Hunt mhunt@peterborough.ca
Brian Bouchardt BBuchardt@peterborough.ca
Our Mayor D. Paul Ayotte mayor@peterborough.ca

You can cut and paste the following if you wish.

Dear Mayor, Councilors and Planners,

Please be leaders and shift the focus of new investment in the transportation network from cars to alternative modes of transportation and pedestrians.  This will ease the congestion on the streets and parking areas, promote health and wellness and prepare Peterborough for the increasing scarcity of petroleum in the future.

This long term planning will burden out tax base less; in the short term by decreasing direct costs and the long term by decreasing the burden on our health systems in the future.  Cars are not a long term solution to transportation.  Let's plan ahead for a healthier and more accessible town.

In the immediate future please make pedestrians and bicycles a priority for the Charlotte St improvements and any Little Lake developments considered.
