A Yakima Roundtoit
The advantages of Yakima Gear Boxes

About this time last year I found myself crouched in the back seat of my little car with a bottle of Swix wax remover in hand.  I had, for about the 15th ski season in a row, gotten klister wax on the back of the headrest.  (For non-skiers I must explain that klister is a type of ski wax that is used in icy or wet conditions.  It has a consistency somewhere between toothpaste, bike grease and epoxy glue.)  As I cursed my way through the half hour it took to get the seat clean I thought for about the 15th time that I really should get a roof box for my Yakima rack.  Well, time passed and I didn't quite get a round to it.  Dee, my lovely partner, always says she can lend me a roundtoit (as in get a round to it) but I am too stubborn to take her up on the offer!

So, summer comes and we are headed out on holiday.  Bikes, climbing gear, camping gear; all of it has to get crammed in our little car.   Being a teacher, Dee generally gets summer holiday packing duty while I work until the moment we race out of town.   Last summer I scurried home to find the driveway filled with our recreational booty and one very grumpy partner.  I will leave out the details but suffice it to say that the day was upon me to cash in my roundtoit!

This winter we happily piled our skis in our new Yakima Skybox every weekend.  I have to say it is much, much better.  I don't have to fight the skis out of the way to get to my coffee holder and I will probably never slam the door on another $20 pole basket.

Looking back I wonder how we ever did without the box.  Over 20 years I have been in this industry so I can't imagine why I didn't solve this issue before.  Maybe what my mother used to say about me procrastinating was true...

Yours in Packing,
Kieran

Kiteboarding at Elmhirst Resort

Jon KiteI wanted to write a little bit about the Elmhirst Resort Kite Boarding weekend that was held this January 29-31st on Rice Lake.  What a great week end to learn about kites and all the possibilities that flying kites entail.  I arrived on Saturday to sunny, clear blue skies and unfortunately not too much wind.  Nevertheless, it was a great day to fly some of the bigger kites that were available to all.  With little wind that day, it meant that we were able to get some of the kites in the air but, not use them to get pulled by the kite.  Little did I know that this was a sport onto itself which is in fact called, Power Kiting.  The idea of course is that before you can get comfortable harnessing the power of the kite as a form of transportation, it is very important to learn how to control the kite.

Kite2This I proceeded to do with a big smile on my face as even the 4 metre kite I was using was enough to pull me off my feet when a gust a wind took hold of the kite.  In some ways, I was grateful that it was not too windy that day as it was a nice, easy way to learn the basics of kite flying.
Sunday brought a bit more wind and with that more possibilities in respect to using some of the knowledge I had learned on Saturday.  Within 10 minutes of arriving I had a someone show me how to fly one of the kites that I had brought down form our rental program.  A short time later I was told to don my skates. Did I mention that due to our warm weather the week before, the lake was a giant skating rink?  With skates on my feet I used the knowledge I had effectively learned from my practice flying to start letting the wind and kite pull me.  Slowly at first but, as I got used to the pull of the kite and knowing where the power zones were I let myself get pulled a bit faster and faster.  I learned quickly that this sport is really, really fun and that the combination of flying the kite and sliding on ice or snow is something that puts a huge smile on my face as well as all the participants that came down that week end.  According to Steve Elmhirst, one of the owners of the resort and the instigator of the week end, we had at least 75-100 people try kite flying that week end.  I for one am hooked on the sport as I was told I would be.  A combination of technical skill in flying the kite as well as the ability to harness the incredible power of wind makes this sport challenging and relatively inexpensive.

Kite 3It is my hope to have some kite flying nights installed into our events program and I will ask all of those interested in this relatively new sport to keep and eye out for details on our future events calender.  I am sure that once you get a chance to experience learning to fly a kite, you may be surprised to find that you are looking forward to some cloudy, windy days.  It's a great opportunity to get off the couch and play outside.  Thanks for reading.
