Loki Mitts
About 6 years ago Scott and I met a quirky young guy in the halls of the Outdoor Retailer show in Salt Lake City.  Rather than sitting in his booth waiting for customers he was out in the hall rounding up anyone and everyone who would listen to him as he demonstrated the features of his new jacket.  At the time I have to admit that I thought he was a bit "out there". After all, how can one guy with one jacket take on the giant brands like Columbia and The North Face?  But, man, was this guy passionate!

As they say, "time will tell".  The Loki jackets turned out to be so unique that successful patent applications followed.  I have attached a couple of links below because it is difficult to do the garments justice in type.  Picture, if you will, a jacket with built in functional mitts and face shield.  The combination makes a jacket system that is very warm for its weight and incredibly versatile.

Finally available in Canada, we have brought in a small selection of Loki jackets for men and women for this winter season.  I don't really know what else to say ...Loki is just kinda awesome in its own ...unique way.  So have a look at the video links below or drop by the store to try one on.   Feeling is believing!

Happy trails,

Kieran

Mud, Merino and Me

I love to ride my bike.  I love to ride my bike all the time but fall brings out something special for a few likeminded fools and myself.  Each fall as the leaves start to change we head out for long rides that take in as many gravel roads, road allowances and long hills as we can find.  Each ride we try to find some section of road that none of us has ridden before.  As we all ride a lot this can pose a challenge.  Over the last few seasons our routes have gotten more outrageous at each outing.  As we have now ridden most roads within a reasonable distance we have turned our sights toward road allowances (now a road allowance, for those not in the know, is a right of way belonging to the crown that has been or could be a road but currently is not.  Usually, they are not much more than a cart track).  It might seem like rambling that I bring this into a little promotional article about a new brand at Wild Rock but I am just about to tie it together.

So, we were about 2 hours into a cold, windy ride when we made the great climb up Solanum Way.  Just after the crest is a road allowance that runs from the north end of Glamorgan Line over toward Bethany.  We turned onto this at a good clip to find huge, bike-and-maybe-even-car eating puddles with only skinny ridges between them.  Perfect fall riding!  My focus went immediately to keeping the speed up and my little tires (that's right, we are riding road bikes!) on the crest of the ridge.  I was focusing all my energy on the dry patch I could see approaching.  About 15' before hitting the dry section my front wheel slipped right and dove axle deep into the muck.  Not to be outdone, my rear wheel went left and I flew starfish-style into the muck.  Flat on my back and slightly winded the brown ooze closed over my chest.  I was in ...deep.  I groveled out to the laughter of my mates.  It was pretty damn funny but it was also 3degrees, windy and we were still about 40km from home.  But (here is were I draw it all together!) I was wearing nothing but merino.  Underlayers, jacket, bib-tights and socks; the lot.  In fact the only thing I did not have covered in wool was my hands and they froze!    In the 11/2 hours it took us to grovel home I was actually pretty comfortable.  Maybe the ½" of muck that covered me was keeping me warm but I like to think it was all down to the merino wool.

So, I like my sheep wooly.  Since my first experience wearing Icebreaker in the mountains of Peru in 2006 to my most recent escapades I have come to love the longhaired merino sheep that give us all this fabulous clothing.  Hardly a day goes by that I don't find myself wearing something made from merino wool.  From boxer short underwear (every single day!) to t-shirts in the summer, from cycling shorts and jerseys to sweaters in the winter all of my favorite clothes come from those fuzzy creatures.

This season Wild Rock is very happy to introduce Ibex to our mix of apparel.  Ibex is an American company that uses pure New Zealand merino fabrics but manufactures most of their goods in the USA.  Ibex has never been shy to experiment with different gauges of merino wool to achieve great performance in a huge range of activities.  The Ibex line ranges from t-shirts to sweaters and outerwear but a few pieces really stand out as unique.   Their Shak garments, for example, are made of a heavier-than-normal 21micron wool, which is every bit as tough as it is comfortable.  I have been wearing one of the Shak full-zip styles for over a year now (ok, not every moment of every day, but I have worn it a lot!) and it is one of the most versatile pieces of clothing I own.  It has gone traveling with me, been worn rock climbing and has consistently been my favorite piece of clothing when I have to dress up a bit.   Ibex also has a great collection of cycling clothing.  As you already know, I can say conclusively that merino wool makes up the best cool weather cycling clothing I have ever worn.

With Ibex on our sales floor Wild Rock is able to offer an additional range of versatile, comfortable apparel to our loyal merino wool customers.  Whether you like to grovel in cold muck or just love the comfort of merino I reckon that is a fine thing.

Yours in muck,
Kieran

Banff Film FestOnce again Wildrock Outfitters is happy to present the Banff Mountain Film Festival to Peterborough.  Wildrock has been presenting the Banff Film Festival to Peterborough for almost 15 years and thanks to your patronage, this years festival will hopefully be the biggest ever.  Due to overwhelming response, we will be presenting the Banff Film Festival at Showplace for two consecutive nights so that more people will be able to share the experience.

For some, the Banff Film Festival has been a yearly pilgrimage.  For others, this may be your first time attending.  For those attending for the first time, here is a quick overview of what the festival is about.

Every year, the Banff Centre in Banff, Alberta receives hundreds of films from all over the world.  The contributors are both amateur film makers and professionals from the outdoor industry. This collection of films range from 3 minute shorts to documentary style programs that may be as long as 50 minutes. The common theme is the outdoors and the relationship
with some very unique and exceptional places, people and things.

Every November, all the films are viewed by an audience which include the judges whose task is to pick and catagorize the best films that will be awarded cash and the honour of being one of the very few films that travel
internationally for the rest of the year so that thousands of people like yourself may see them.  It is our hope that this years Banff Mountain Film Festival will be the best we have ever had and we invite you to attend and share and enjoy the experience. See you there!

Scott's Rant

stop loafing What are you doing for yourself?

Every week I ask people how they are doing or what they have been up to; many times the answer is not much, work is busy, nothing, there is no time, I used to do stuff but lately...

This is a re-occurring theme and this stems from poor decision-making on our part and equally poor time management.  Take 5 minutes and document 3 things you wish you had more time for and 3 things you could do less of and life would be better.

3 things that I like or want to do:
- these things might be for selfish pleasure (sport, hobby, lifestyle)
- they might also be for others (charity, volunteer, time with family/friend)
- they might also be things that are not fun now but will enable more fun later (refinish canoe, fix deck, RRSP)

Go ahead and write them down... seriously

1.
2.
3.

3 things that I want to do less of:
- these could be time wasters you find unsatisfying (how satisfied are you really after watching a Friend's episode for the 3rd time?
- these could be things you do due to laziness that you regret after. (Another night of Facebook or wandering a mall)
- these could be mildly negative tasks you could be more efficient at.  (Pay your neighbour's kid to mow the lawn, get a list ready before shopping)

Get your pen out again

2.
3.

Now stick this list on your fridge and go at it for a month.  If you get one on each list accomplished, next month will be better than this month.  It is that easy.
