Audio Hits the Slopes
Scullcandy earphones

Winter '08 is all about the audiophiles on the slopes. This fall there is an incredible array of new technologies to pump the tunes into your cranium while snowboarding. Tunes and riding have gone hand in hand for years. This meant people crushing headphones inside their helmets or scrunching their headphones over their toques. No longer is there a need to compromise comfort or fidelity.

For the toque inclined, Burton sibling company RED (Ride Enhancing Devices) offers a simple fix. The RED Audex Beanie ($59.99) incorporates a fine set of mini headphones into the hats earflaps. You just plug your hat in and go.

For the folks who are looking to rock a helmet with tunes and are tired of having your headphones pushed into your head by your helmet or having the big phones fall off in the midst of trying to impress, RED has saved the day. They offer the RED Audex Hi-Fi helmet with sub-woofer system ($219.99). This helmet has a great set of phones built into the earflaps and a sub- woofer that rests on your skull at the back of your head. The sound is incredible. The AA powered woofer literally sends shiver up your spine.

If you like the Sub-Woofer idea but are not ready to go for a wired hat or full blown helmet you can always rock a pair of Skull Candy Skull Crushers ($99.99). This set of headphones has the same AA powered sub-woofer system in a sturdy set of headphones that you can fit over your favorite toque.

If the DJ sized headphones are not your style and your are looking for something a little more subtle you could try the Skull Candy Smokin Buds ($39.99). These tiny headphones come with 3 different silicon earpiece sizes that stick. No matter what move you are making your headphones won't fall out and the sound is amazing.

This winter the slopes will be filled with the sound of music! All the above are available at Wild Rock.

Fostering Sustainable Business in Peterborough
Ffostering Sustainable Business

As many of our readers will know, one of the goals of Wild Rock is to preserve the places where we like to go out and play. Beyond trying hard to source responsibly manufactered goods we have also done a waste audit with Peterborough Green-up to help clean up our act locally. You may also remember the article Kieran wrote about switching to greener power with bullfrog power. As a continuation of our trying to be greener, we have been looking into an energy audit for our building. We stumbled on a new program that we would like to share called the Electricity Retrofit Initiative Program. There isn't much time to get your application in so read on if you are interested in saving money and doing some good for the world. I will turn this article over to Charles Z Levkoe from Fostering Sustainable Business Practices in the Greater Peterborough Area. This program is for businesses but if you are interested in making similar changes for your home, contact Greenup.

This week Peterborough Green-Up Launched its newest initiative entitled, Fostering Sustainable Business Practices in the Greater Peterborough Area. The program aims to support businesses, organizations and institutions in their desire to develop more sustainable environmental, social and economically viable business practices. This innovative new project hopes to break down barriers while encourage businesses and the larger community to foster more sustainable approaches to our work.

A launch event, held on September 21st brought together over 70 representatives from local businesses, organizations and institutions and included a delicious locally sourced organic breakfast. Bob Willard, a leading international expert on "the business value of corporate sustainability strategies" gave an engaging keynote address. Key political representatives including MP Dean Del Mastro, MPP Jeff Leal, County planner Brian Wier, and City Mayor Paul Ayotte expressed their commitment to supporting sustainability in the greater Peterborough community.

The Fostering Sustainable Business Program's first of many initiatives is the Electricity Retrofit Initiative Program (ERIP). This program in cooperation with Peterborough Distribution Inc. (PDI) aims to assist businesses, organizations and institutions in the greater Peterborough area to conserve energy and shift their loads from periods of peak demand to lower cost times of the day. The objective of the program is to improve energy conservation by offering incentives for sustainable energy retrofits that result in on- peak demand savings and annual energy savings. A recent feasibility study noted that Peterborough industries spend about $12 million annually on energy, mostly on manufacturing and warehousing. Energy- efficiency upgrades could cut that by $3 to 4 million (25 to 33 per cent).

If you are a business, organization or institution and are interested in getting involved in the ERIP program or learning more about sustainable business practices, contact the Fostering Sustainable Business Practices in Greater Peterborough program at (705) 536-9943 or go to the web site at www.sustainableptbo.on.ca.

Snowboarding hits the streets.
Burton 2007

For years when you thought of snowboarding you immediately envisioned snowy mountains but this is not what the young riders see. Snowboarding has gone urban. City kids take a shovel and make any incline useful snowboard terrain. A set of stairs with a rail becomes paradise. One small molehill and a picnic table is enough for hours of entertainment. Snowboarding has endorsed all the skateboard tricks and vice versa.

With this shift in riding styles from mountain to urban comes a whole new style of boards designed for jibbing. Jibbing is that skateboard style of snowboarding for you less youthful out there. The boards are tough because they are designed to slide down steel rails, grind on wood and land jump after jump. The boards emphasize forgiveness instead of edge hold so that landing tricks etc slightly off balance does result in an immediate pancake crash.

Riders look for flexible boot- binding concepts that won't inhibit tweaked angles needed to perform tricks. Burton, Forum, Rome and Atomic are some leading companies that have specific product that excels at jibbing yet works well at the ski area. Wild Rock stocks a complete selection of boards, boots, bindings and DVD's about and for urban riding.

What a great way for city kids to spend time. It sure is better than developing carpel tunnel in front of the TV!
