Snowshoeing
 | | Sue and Joleen snowshoeing |
When the snow flies, the Kawarthas is where it's at for snowshoeing. Jackson Park, Mark S. Burnham Park and the Trent University Bird/Wildlife Sanctuary are some local hotspots for snowshoeing areas in the city of Peterborough. If you are looking for something a little more adventurous then places such as the Petroglyphs Provincial Park, Silent Lake Provincial Park, Emily Park and the Warsaw Caves Conservation Area may be more up you alley. So pack up your snowshoes, a thermos of hot chocolate, warm clothes and head outside for fresh air and exercise. Don't forget! Stay tuned to the Events Calendar for the next Snowshoe Demo!
Snowboarding
 | | Resting before the next run |
You're probably not going to be able to find a lot of "pow-pow" or huge vertical in the Kawarthas but there is still some good snowboarding to be had. Devil's Elbow, only a 20 min drive from Peterborough, it is the closest hill to access. The Elbow has 10 runs and a snowpark for the snowboarders and twin tip skiers. Other hills in the area are Kirby - Oshawa Ski Club and Sir Sams in Haliburton.
X-Cross Country Skiing
 | | Dave, Kris, Kieran and Joleen skate skiing |
Whether it's the powerful kick of a classic skier or the graceful speed of a skate skier, nothing beats the rhythmic flow of x-country skiing. Skiing in the Kawarthas can range from skiing on the rail path in Jackson Park to groomed trails at the Kawartha Nordic Centre in Haultain. When there is enough snow on the ground, Jackson Park, the Trent University Bird/Wildlife Sanctuary and even the Rotary Trail can be skied on. The trails are not groomed but it's well worth the effort to get out.
