Books & Booze: Ideas For The Days You Can't Go Out And Play

Books & Booze: Ideas For The Days You Can't Go Out And Play | Wild Rock Outfitters

Icy winter roads, stormy skies, or injuries can make it hard to get out and enjoy the outdoors. For those days you'd rather just stay in bed, here are our recommendations to make the most of the time indoors: with a good book and a good drink!

IF YOU WANT TO LOSE YOURSELF IN A GOOD STORY

419, by Will Ferguson, is a reality-based piece of fiction that makes you rethink good/bad and right/wrong in a brilliant way. Pair it with a G&T (just not Bombay, ok?), and add lemon and frozen strawberries instead of ice.

The Handmaid’s Tale, by Margaret Atwood - this one is disturbingly close-to-home at times but a freaky-fun read if you’re into that! Read The Testaments too while you’re at it. Enjoy it with a Vodka Soda - get something from Poland, and just don’t buy Smirnoff. Praise be.

The Fifth Season, by N.K. Jemisin - if you’re going to read this fantasy trilogy, be prepared to lose sleep reading. It goes smoothly with Carnivor, a downright delicious red wine that I would drink a whole bottle of (except for the wicked hangover a whole bottle would cause).

Fatherland, by Robert Harris, is a crime drama based in a version of the 1950s where Hitler won the war. Definitely pair it with an Old Fashioned (stirred exactly 30 times).

The Power and The Glory by Graham Greene. In a time of banned religion, a complicated and corrupted soul risks his life to tend to the souls of his parish even as he questions the virtue of his own. An intimately human story of struggle and belief. Read it with The Glenlivet, neat - it’s just that kind of read.

WHEN YOU NEED TO FIRE UP YOUR MOTIVATION

Daring Greatly, by Brene Brown - a book for fostering a fuller, more vulnerable self, paired with Bread & Butter, a full, dry red wine that makes you feel classy and isn’t expensive.

An Astronaut’s Guide to Life on Earth, by Chris Hadfield - this one is motivating and full of wisdom, plus Juicy Ass Hazy IPA from Flying Monkeys - I don’t even like IPAs normally, but this one is pretty great!

Grit, by Angela Duckworth, is your manual on how to fail well and overcome being pretty average, with Live Transmission Milkshake IPA by Flying Monkeys - I’m not into milkshake IPAs but this one comes highly recommended.

WHEN YOU’RE IN SEARCH OF ADVENTURE

Little Princes, by Conor Grennan. Read this one for some independence-inspiration and a beautiful story. It goes well with Viking Honour Scotch Whisky, which is sweet and less smokey than other scotches; it will make you feel bad-ass.

The Rider by Tim Krabbe is an inside view into the psyche of an amateur bike racer. Pour yourself a Vodka Water (also known as the Noel Savage), because you want to be fast.

Once a Runner by John L. Parker Jr. is a cult-classic reality-based fiction about an aspiring Olympian’s chaotic and hilarious life journey. Enjoy this book with a Bumbu Rum & Coke, purportedly the greatest Bajan rum you’ve ever had.

Us Against You, by Frederik Backman is a heart-wrenching fictional story about a hockey community surviving big social and political challenges. Pair it with 8 or Better from The Publican House - it’s strong and seasonal, so get it soon!

HAPPY READING!
