A review from Wild Rock's Scott Murison
"The Salomon Spikecross running shoes are the gold standard for winter trail and road running. As someone who has relied on my Salomon Spikecross 3’s since 2014, logging over 6,000 km across nine winters, I can confidently say these shoes are built to last and perform. Wild Rock’s current model, the Salomon Spikecross 6 GTX, continues this legacy of excellence with enhanced features.
The Spikecross 6 GTX offers a GORE-TEX waterproof membrane, ensuring your feet stay warm and dry even in the harshest winter conditions. The standout feature is its 12 carbide-tipped spikes, providing incredible grip on black ice and loose snow, making every stride feel secure regardless of the terrain. These spikes are incredibly durable; my older model’s tips are still going strong after almost a decade. The Contagrip outsole ensures versatility, excelling on icy trails while handling bare asphalt with ease—though they do emit a light clicking sound on hard surfaces.
For me, the true test of these shoes has been on my favorite local routes in Peterborough. The trails in Jackson’s Park offer a mix of terrain, with snow-packed paths and icy sections, where the Spikecross excels in keeping me steady. I also love running the Rail Trail and the Moraine Trails from Parkhill to Trent, both of which present a mix of hard-packed snow and occasional slush. For a more urban experience, the Parkway Trail is a great option, and these shoes handle its paved sections with the same reliability they show on trails. The aggressive tread grips everything from loose snow to slippery bridges, and the waterproof upper keeps my feet dry no matter the conditions.
The SensiFit technology and Quicklace system ensure a snug, precise fit, reducing the chance of slipping or discomfort. These features, combined with their lightweight yet robust design, make the Spikecross a joy to wear for runs between 5-10 km or even longer. The aggressive treads dig into snow effortlessly, while the carbide-tipped spikes make icy surfaces feel less daunting.
What truly stands out is the durability. After nine years of regular use, my Spikecross 3’s are still in great shape, which speaks volumes about Salomon’s quality. If you’re looking for a winter running shoe that combines performance, durability, and versatility, the Salomon Spikecross 6 GTX is an exceptional choice. Highly recommended for both trail and urban winter running!"
