Picking the right backpacking tent comes down to a handful of trade-offs: weight versus space, price versus durability, three-season versus four. Skimp on the wrong feature and it will catch up with you eventually, maybe 2 hours into the hike when your shoulders just can't take the extra weight any longer, or maybe on trip six when a pole snaps mid-setup.
We carry a range of backpacking tents for everything from a quick overnighter to a week deep in Algonquin, and the right one depends less on brand and more on how what your adventures actually look like. Here's what to look at before you buy:
You carry everything on your back, so every tent ounce is an ounce you feel a couple hours into your hike. Newer fabrics and pole designs have narrowed the gap between ultralight and durable, so you're not stuck choosing one over the other to the degree you might have years ago.
Check the rainfly coverage, not just whether it has one. A short rainfly that doesn't reach the ground will let wind and spray in during a big storm. Look for taped or sealed seams, and maybe a footprint so wet ground doesn't soak through. If you're tripping into shoulder season, this matters even more.
Floor space and peak height affect how livable your tent feels once you're stuck in it on a bad weather day. A vestibule keeps your wet boots and pack out of your sleeping space, which means you might actually be able to stretch out without getting up in your tent mate's personal space.
