Gear Inspection Guide

We accept used clothing and gear from trusted outdoor brands. We'll accept most items, as long as they are from an accepted brand & category, and are clean & in good condition.

Top Issues

Gear with the following issues is frequently sent in, but is not eligible for trade-in.

Missing or Illegible Tags

Original manufacturer and care tags are required and must be legible to verify size, material, and authenticity.

Customized or Altered Gear

Gear must not have been modified from its original design, including personalized embroidery or custom prints for teams or clubs.

Missing or Broken Parts

All components must be present, intact, and functional to ensure the gear’s usability and safety.

Accepted Gear Conditions

Gear that is clean and in good condition is further classified into three tiers. Trade-in credit is determined based on the product category, brand, and condition tier.

Barely Used

New or like-new — No signs of wear.

Lightly Used

Used a handful of times — Minor signs of wear.

Moderately Used

Used regularly — Normal signs of wear.

Common Signs of Wear

Here's what we look for when assessing gear — our team, who have final say when it comes to accepting gear, uses the same checklist.

Holes

Physical openings or tears in fabric, padding, or other materials.

  • Barely Used: No holes.

  • Lightly Used: Tiny pinholes or snags that do not affect function.

  • Moderately Used: May show small worn spots that haven’t broken through the material.

Not Eligible: Obvious holes, or holes that compromise the performance — for example, a tent rainfly with holes that leak, or boots with holes in the soles.

Stains

Discoloration from dirt, sweat, mold, or spills that may weaken fabric or hold odours.

  • Barely Used: No stains.

  • Lightly Used: A tiny, faint mark that doesn’t penetrate the fabric deeply.

  • Moderately Used: Small, non-obvious light stains in inconspicuous areas that don’t affect function.

Not Eligible: Obvious or high-contrast staining — for example, large grease marks on a jacket sleeve or food spills that could attract mold.

Delamination

When layers of a material start to separate or peel apart.

  • Barely Used: No delamination.

  • Lightly Used: No delamination.

  • Moderately Used: Small area of lifting on a coating edge that does not affect performance and is stable.

Not Eligible: Any peeling — like a waterproof layers splitting on a tent floor or jacket or a ski’s top layer lifting from the core.

Pilling

Small balls or fuzz that form on the surface of fabrics due to friction and wear.

  • Barely Used: No pilling.

  • Lightly Used: A few small pills in high-friction areas.

  • Moderately Used: Some pilling in common spots, but fabric is still in good condition and looks well cared for.

Not Eligible: Heavy pilling — for example, excessive fuzz that makes the item look overly worn.

Shrinkage

The reduction in size of materials, often due to exposure to heat or water.

  • Barely Used: No shrinkage.

  • Lightly Used: No noticeable shrinkage.

  • Moderately Used: Slight change in fit or length that does not affect wearability.

Not Eligible: Obvious shrinkage that affects size or performance — like wool base layers that shrank in the wash or tent fabric that has contracted significantly.

Fraying

When fabric edges unravel or threads break loose.

  • Barely Used: No fraying.

  • Lightly Used: Tiny loose thread at a seam.

  • Moderately Used: Minor fraying in non-critical areas that does not affect strength or safety — for example, slight wear at a pocket edge.

Not Eligible: Visible fraying or fraying in structural or weight-bearing areas — like backpack straps or harness webbing with loose, worn fibers.

Pulled Threads

Loose threads that have been snagged or pulled from the weave of a fabric.

  • Barely Used: No pulled threads.

  • Lightly Used: Lightly pulled thread(s) in an inconspicuous area.

  • Moderately Used: Moderately pulled thread(s) in an inconspicuous area.

Not Eligible: Prominent pulled threads, or pulled threads that compromise the fabric’s integrity or appearance.

Stretched or Worn Elastic

Elastic parts that have lost their stretch and no longer hold their shape properly, reducing the fit and function of waistbands, cuffs, straps, or hems.

  • Barely Used: Elastic fully functional, like new.

  • Lightly Used: Slightly looser but still holds shape.

  • Moderately Used: Elastic still holds shape, but has slightly relaxed — fit is still functional.

Not Eligible: Elastic overstretched — jacket cuffs don’t stay snug or waistbands sag, rendering the item uncomfortable or ineffective.

UV-Damage

Fading, brittleness, or weakening of materials caused by prolonged exposure to sunlight.

  • Barely Used: No fading or brittleness.

  • Lightly Used: Slight fading of fabric color.

  • Moderately Used: Some visible fading that does not weaken the material — fabric remains strong and functional.

Not Eligible: Noticeable fading and fragile fabric — like a tent fly that tears easily after years of sun exposure.
